CityGrip provides 24/7 mobile tyre change on the M1, covering J1 to J48 including the hard shoulder and the emergency refuge areas on the smart-motorway sections. We fit your spare, supply and fit a replacement tyre if you have no spare, deal with locking wheel nuts and seized wheels, or recover the vehicle if the tyre cannot be changed safely on a live carriageway. Motorway mobile tyre change runs from £250 to £750 depending on the tyre and vehicle, with the exact price agreed before we set off. Call 07960 200253 for a mobile tyre fitter near you on the M1.
The M1 carries enormous volumes of freight and commuter traffic between London and the North, and a blowout at 70mph on a converted all-lane-running section leaves you with nowhere to go. Our tyre vans cover the southern M1 from our London base and the rest through our national network, reaching your junction with the right equipment to change the wheel or fit a replacement tyre.
M1 mobile tyre FAQs
Do you cover the whole M1 from London to Leeds?
Yes. We cover the M1 from Junction 1 at Staples Corner in north London to Junction 48 near Leeds, including the M25 interchange at Junction 6a and the M6 interchange at Junction 19, working from our London base and our national operator network.
Which parts of the M1 have no hard shoulder?
Several converted smart-motorway stretches, including around Junctions 10 to 13, 23a to 25, 28 to 31, 32 to 35a and 39 to 42, run all lanes with no permanent hard shoulder. On those, head for an emergency refuge area or the next exit if your tyre will bear it.
Why are lorries a problem for tyres on the M1?
The M1 carries some of the heaviest freight in the country, and shredded lorry tyres and shed loads across the lanes are a constant cause of punctures and blowouts. On the all-lane-running sections there is no hard shoulder to escape to, so get to a refuge or the next exit and let us come to you.
How much is a mobile tyre change on the M1?
Motorway mobile tyre change runs from £250 to £750. It costs more than an ordinary roadside tyre change (from £90) because it is done on a live, high-speed carriageway with the correct warning equipment and safety procedures. A common tyre on a standard car sits at the lower end; a large, low-profile, run-flat or 4×4 tyre supplied at night sits at the upper end. We agree the exact figure on the phone before we set off.
Can you fit a tyre if I have no spare near J1 Staples Corner on the M1?
Yes. Most new cars carry no spare, only a sealant kit, which cannot fix a sidewall cut or a blowout. We can supply and fit a matching tyre at the roadside near J1 Staples Corner where it is safe to do so, or recover you towards J14-15 Newport Pagnell if it is not.
Should I change the tyre myself between J1 Staples Corner and J42-43 M62 Leeds on the M1?
No. Changing a wheel anywhere on the M1, whether that is up by J1 Staples Corner or down towards J42-43 M62 Leeds, is one of the most dangerous things you can do on a motorway. Get everyone out of the left-hand doors and behind the safety barrier, and call us. If you are stuck in a live lane and cannot get out safely, stay belted in with your hazards on and call 999.
How do I tell you exactly where I am on the M1?
Give us 'M1', the last junction you passed (for example J21 Leicester Forest East), your direction of travel, and the number on the nearest blue marker post or the driver location sign on the verge. That pins your position to within about 100 metres so we reach you quickly.
Can you change tyres on vans and 4x4s on the M1?
Yes. We change tyres on cars, vans, 4x4s and light commercials anywhere along the M1, and carry the equipment for larger wheels, locking nuts and wheels seized to the hub.
My car has run-flat tyres, do I still need you on the M1?
Run-flats let you keep going a limited distance at reduced speed, typically around 50 miles at up to 50mph, but that is a get-you-off-the-M1 measure, not a repair, and many run-flats cannot be repaired at all once run flat. Leave at the next exit if you safely can, then call us to supply and fit a replacement or recover you.
My tyre pressure warning light has come on near J6a M25, can I carry on?
Treat it as a warning that something is wrong. A slow puncture can become a blowout at M1 speeds. Ease off, leave at the next exit if you can do so safely and check the tyre. If it is going down, do not carry on, get somewhere safe and call us.
What is the legal tyre tread depth for driving the M1?
The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread and around the whole circumference, the same limit anywhere in the UK. Below that you risk a fine and penalty points for each illegal tyre, and grip and wet braking fall away long before you reach the limit. Any tyre we supply and fit is legal and correctly matched to your vehicle.
What's the nearest service station on the M1 if I break down?
The M1 has service areas at London Gateway (near Junction 2), Toddington (Junctions 11a-12), Newport Pagnell (Junctions 14-15), Watford Gap (Junctions 16-17), Leicester Forest East (Junction 21), Trowell (Junctions 25-26), Tibshelf (Junctions 28-29) and Woodall (Junctions 30-31). If a roadside tyre fit is not safe, we take you to whichever is nearest. Mobile tyre change on the M1 costs £250 to £750 depending on the job, the same motorway pricing the length of the route.
