Is there a hard shoulder on the M40?
The M40 is largely a conventional motorway that keeps its hard shoulder for most of its length, so you usually have somewhere to pull in. It is still live traffic though, so get behind the barrier and do not attempt to change the wheel yourself.
Is the M40 safer than a smart motorway for a flat tyre?
In one sense yes, because the M40 keeps its hard shoulder for effectively its whole length, so you have somewhere to pull in. But it is fast, rural and unlit for long stretches, so at night get well back from the carriageway and make yourself visible while you wait for us.
How much is a mobile tyre change on the M40?
Motorway mobile tyre change runs from £250 to £750. It costs more than an ordinary roadside tyre change (from £90) because it is done on a live, high-speed carriageway with the correct warning equipment and safety procedures. Can you fit a tyre if I have no spare near J1a M25 on the M40?
Yes. Most new cars carry no spare, only a sealant kit, which cannot fix a sidewall cut or a blowout. We can supply and fit a matching tyre at the roadside near J1a M25 where it is safe to do so, or recover you towards J5 Stokenchurch if it is not.
Should I change the tyre myself between J1a M25 and J16 Birmingham on the M40?
No. Changing a wheel anywhere on the M40, whether that is up by J1a M25 or down towards J16 Birmingham, is one of the most dangerous things you can do on a motorway. Get everyone out of the left-hand doors and behind the safety barrier, and call us. If you are stuck in a live lane and cannot get out safely, stay belted in with your hazards on and call 999.
How do I tell you exactly where I am on the M40?
Give us 'M40', the last junction you passed (for example J8 Oxford services), your direction of travel, and the number on the nearest blue marker post or the driver location sign on the verge. That pins your position to within about 100 metres so we reach you quickly.

My car has run-flat tyres, do I still need you on the M40?
Run-flats let you keep going a limited distance at reduced speed, typically around 50 miles at up to 50mph, but that is a get-you-off-the-M40 measure, not a repair, and many run-flats cannot be repaired at all once run flat. Leave at the next exit if you safely can, then call us to supply and fit a replacement or recover you.
My tyre pressure warning light has come on near J2 Beaconsfield, can I carry on?
Treat it as a warning that something is wrong. A slow puncture can become a blowout at M40 speeds. Ease off, leave at the next exit if you can do so safely and check the tyre. If it is going down, do not carry on, get somewhere safe and call us.
What is the legal tyre tread depth for driving the M40?
The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread and around the whole circumference, the same limit anywhere in the UK. Below that you risk a fine and penalty points for each illegal tyre, and grip and wet braking fall away long before you reach the limit. Any tyre we supply and fit is legal and correctly matched to your vehicle.
