CityGrip provides 24/7 mobile tyre change on the A1, covering London to Edinburgh including the hard shoulder and the emergency refuge areas on the smart-motorway sections. We fit your spare, supply and fit a replacement tyre if you have no spare, deal with locking wheel nuts and seized wheels, or recover the vehicle if the tyre cannot be changed safely on a live carriageway. Motorway mobile tyre change runs from £250 to £750 depending on the tyre and vehicle, with the exact price agreed before we set off. Call 07960 200253 for a mobile tyre fitter near you on the A1.

The A1, Britain’s historic Great North Road, has carried traffic between London and Edinburgh for over a century, and today mixes two genuine A1(M) motorway sections with hundreds of miles of ordinary dual carriageway serving Peterborough, Grantham, Doncaster, York, Durham and Newcastle along the way. A flat tyre on the motorway-standard stretch through Hertfordshire, a puncture on the ordinary dual carriageway through Yorkshire, or a blowout heading into Newcastle all need a mobile tyre fitter who understands the difference, which is exactly what CityGrip arranges on the A1.

A1 mobile tyre FAQs

Does the A1 have a hard shoulder?

Only in two places: the A1(M) section from the M25 to Stotfold in Hertfordshire, and the A1(M) section from Walshford to Dishforth in North Yorkshire. Everywhere else, including the long dual-carriageway stretches through the East Midlands, Yorkshire and the North East, there is no hard shoulder, so get as far onto the verge as you safely can rather than assume one exists.

Do you cover the whole A1 from London to Edinburgh?

Yes. We cover the southern A1 and the Hertfordshire A1(M) directly from our London base, and the rest of the route north through Yorkshire, County Durham and Northumberland through our national operator network.

What's the nearest service station on the A1 if I break down?

The A1 has 39 official service areas along its length, including Baldock, Peterborough, Grantham North, Markham Moor, Wetherby, Scotch Corner, Durham and Washington services. If a tyre cannot be changed safely at the roadside, we take you to whichever is nearest. Mobile tyre change on the A1 costs £250 to £750 depending on the job, the same pricing the length of the route.

How much is a mobile tyre change on the A1?

Motorway mobile tyre change runs from £250 to £750. It costs more than an ordinary roadside tyre change (from £90) because it is done on a live, high-speed carriageway with the correct warning equipment and safety procedures. A common tyre on a standard car sits at the lower end; a large, low-profile, run-flat or 4×4 tyre supplied at night sits at the upper end. We agree the exact figure on the phone before we set off.

Can you fit a tyre if I have no spare near Baldock Services on the A1?

Yes. Most new cars carry no spare, only a sealant kit, which cannot fix a sidewall cut or a blowout. We can supply and fit a matching tyre at the roadside near Baldock Services where it is safe to do so, or recover you towards Wetherby Services if it is not.

Should I change the tyre myself between Baldock Services and Washington Services on the A1?

No. Changing a wheel anywhere on the A1, whether that is up by Baldock Services or down towards Washington Services, is one of the most dangerous things you can do on a motorway. Get everyone out of the left-hand doors and behind the safety barrier, and call us. If you are stuck in a live lane and cannot get out safely, stay belted in with your hazards on and call 999.

How do I tell you exactly where I am on the A1?

Give us 'A1', the last junction you passed (for example Wetherby Services), your direction of travel, and the number on the nearest blue marker post or the driver location sign on the verge. That pins your position to within about 100 metres so we reach you quickly.

Can you change tyres on vans and 4x4s on the A1?

Yes. We change tyres on cars, vans, 4x4s and light commercials anywhere along the A1, and carry the equipment for larger wheels, locking nuts and wheels seized to the hub.

My car has run-flat tyres, do I still need you on the A1?

Run-flats let you keep going a limited distance at reduced speed, typically around 50 miles at up to 50mph, but that is a get-you-off-the-A1 measure, not a repair, and many run-flats cannot be repaired at all once run flat. Leave at the next exit if you safely can, then call us to supply and fit a replacement or recover you.

My tyre pressure warning light has come on near Peterborough Services, can I carry on?

Treat it as a warning that something is wrong. A slow puncture can become a blowout at A1 speeds. Ease off, leave at the next exit if you can do so safely and check the tyre. If it is going down, do not carry on, get somewhere safe and call us.

What is the legal tyre tread depth for driving the A1?

The legal minimum is 1.6mm across the central three-quarters of the tread and around the whole circumference, the same limit anywhere in the UK. Below that you risk a fine and penalty points for each illegal tyre, and grip and wet braking fall away long before you reach the limit. Any tyre we supply and fit is legal and correctly matched to your vehicle.
