CityGrip Recovery runs 24 hour car recovery, towing, jump starts and non-fault accident recovery across Woodford Green, IG8. Call 07960 200253 and we agree the price on the phone before anyone sets off. Recovery and towing starts at £80, a jump start is from £60 and fuel work runs £70 to £200, with no call-out fee at any hour. If your car has stopped on the A104 High Road near the Churchill statue, in the Monkhams Avenue grid, on Snakes Lane West by the fire station or inside Woodford station car park, give us the nearest landmark and tell us which side of the Central line you are on. Broadmead Road bridge is still closed to motor traffic, and that decides how we reach you.
Broadmead Road bridge is closed, and it decides how we reach you
Every recovery job in IG8 now starts with one question: which side of the Central line are you on? Broadmead Road bridge, built in 1937, has been closed to all motor vehicles since July 2023, after an inspection found cracks, falling concrete and concrete corrosion above the live railway underneath. Around 15,000 vehicle movements a day used to cross it. It stays open to pedestrians, cyclists and motorcycles, but a car, a van or a recovery truck cannot go over it, and the signed diversion runs via the A406 to Chigwell Road or back up to the High Road.
That one closure reshapes the whole district. The A1009 used to work as a continuous cross-route: Chingford Lane in from the west, over the High Road, on as Snakes Lane West past Johnston Road and Broomhill Road, then Broadmead Road down to Chigwell Road. With the middle of that chain severed, traffic that would have crossed at Broadmead now sits on Snakes Lane East, Chigwell Road and the North Circular instead. When you call 07960 200253, saying you are near The Broadway rather than near Chigwell Road can be the difference between a straight run in and a long loop around the A406.
There is no reopening date. Redbridge Cabinet resolved on 17 July 2025 to demolish the bridge and build a new single span over the Central line with reinforced soil wall approach ramps, and the council submitted an £80 million bid to the Department for Transport Structures Fund on 3 August 2026, with a decision expected in autumn 2026 and any funded scheme required to finish by March 2030. Until something changes on the ground, we plan Woodford Green jobs around a broken crossing rather than trusting the map.
Had a non-fault accident? Your recovery is free.
If another driver was at fault, CityGrip arranges free recovery, secure storage, a like-for-like courtesy car and full claims management, with every cost recovered from the at-fault driver’s insurer. You pay nothing, and your no-claims bonus stays intact.
The A104 High Road: 30,000 vehicles a day and guardrail where the refuge should be
Woodford Green is strung along a single spine that follows an ancient forest track along a ridge about 60 metres above sea level. Redbridge's classified roads register splits the corridor at the Woodford New Road roundabout: the High Road is the A1199 from Chelmsford Road up to that roundabout, and the A104 from the roundabout north towards High Road Buckhurst Hill. One detail is worth knowing if you are stopped on it. This is a Redbridge borough road, not a TfL red route. The red route network in Redbridge covers only the A12, the A1400 Woodford Avenue and Southend Road, and the A406, so the High Road is governed by ordinary borough yellow lines, bus stop clearways and permit bays rather than red route no-stopping rules.
None of that makes it a comfortable place to stand beside a broken car. Department for Transport count point 26199, immediately south of Chingford Lane, recorded 32,878 motor vehicles a day in 2025 together with 440 pedal cycles, on a road with no protected cycle provision. The section running through the village itself recorded 31,765 in 2024 and 27,452 in 2025. Further north between Chingford Lane and Whitehall Road at Woodford Wells the figure was 21,196, and Woodford New Road below the A406 carried 20,857. Redbridge's own conservation area appraisal treats the High Road as a barrier: bulky guardrails run along much of it, there are 2 metre guardrails in front of Bancroft's School at 611 to 627 High Road, and a pedestrian underpass sits north of St Thomas of Canterbury Roman Catholic Church. The same document says plainly that few motorists seem to observe the clearly marked speed limits.
The guardrail is the practical problem. It removes almost all of the informal nearside refuge you would otherwise roll into, so a car that dies outside The Castle at 393 to 395 High Road, beside the Anti-Air War Memorial or near the Churchill statue at Broomhill Walk has nowhere sensible to be pushed. If the vehicle still rolls and it is safe to move it, the side streets are the answer: Mill Lane, The Square, Johnston Road and the north end of Broomhill Road all sit just off the spine. If it will not roll, say so on the phone and we will bring it onto a flatbed and move it before anyone starts work on it.
Charlie Brown's Roundabout and the M11 approach: we move the car, we do not fix it there
The southern gateway to Woodford Green is Charlie Brown's Roundabout, where the A406 North Circular meets the A113 Chigwell Road and the A1400 Southend Road, with the Woodford Roundabout Viaduct flying over the top to feed the M11. DfT count point 17022 on the A406 approach recorded 149,848 motor vehicles a day in 2025, including 4,997 HGVs, 932 buses and coaches and 1,888 two-wheeled motor vehicles. TfL rebuilt the junction over four months from Monday 9 July 2018, adding five pedestrian crossings and widening the footways, after 32 collisions on the roundabout between January 2013 and December 2015.
There is no hard shoulder and no lay-by on the roundabout or on its slip roads, and it is a red route where stopping is prohibited. This is the one part of the district where we will not attempt a roadside repair, and neither should you. Get out on the side away from traffic if you safely can, stand behind a barrier, leave the hazard lights on, and do not put out a warning triangle on the motorway or its slips. A triangle set at least 45 metres behind the vehicle is sensible on an ordinary road like the High Road, and specifically wrong here.
Cost follows the same logic. Recovery and towing starts at £80 wherever the vehicle is, but any roadside work on a motorway or fast dual carriageway needs live-traffic safety procedure and is priced accordingly, which is why mobile tyre fitting is £140 on ordinary and urban roads but £250 to £750 on the M11, the A406 or the A12. If your fault happens on one of those roads, the honest answer is nearly always the same: let us lift the car and move it a short distance to a side street off Chigwell Road, or into the station car park, and deal with it properly there.
Woodford station car park, the Monkhams avenues and the village side streets
There are a handful of places in Woodford Green where a recovery job is genuinely straightforward, and the most useful is the TfL car park at Woodford station on Snakes Lane, IG8 7QE. It has 184 bays (173 standard, 10 Blue Badge and 1 motorcycle), it is open 24 hours, it is cashless with a seven day maximum stay, and it is listed as having no height restriction. That last point matters more than the rest put together, because it means a high sided van or a flatbed can drive in rather than working from a live lane outside. Parking is £10.60 on weekdays and £7.40 at weekends.
East of the High Road, the Monkhams Estate is the other easy answer. Monkhams Avenue, Monkhams Drive, King's Avenue, Queen's Avenue and Park Avenue were laid out on generous plots, originally marketed at 230 feet deep, and Redbridge's Woodford Broadway appraisal describes the roads as generously proportioned, usually with pavements to either side and characteristically lined with street trees. Many front gardens have since been converted to driveways. Kerbside width plus off-street access is exactly what a tow or a jump start needs, so if the car is still drivable and you live on the estate, getting it onto your own driveway before we arrive makes everything simpler. Take care on King's Avenue, which carries traffic at speed and has been calmed with fluorescent bollards, road markings and red tarmac.
In the village core the space is tighter but it is there. The 2007 appraisal records a high level of car parking around the village, including the surfaced area north of The Castle, and the streets off the spine give us somewhere to set up out of the flow. On the western, forest facing side, Woodford Golf Club car park on Sunset Avenue, IG8 0ST, is the parking the City of London lists for Hatch Forest and Whitehall Plain, and it is one of the few pieces of hard standing near the forest edge. If what you actually need is a wheel rather than a tow, that is a different job with different kit and its own pricing, and it is covered on our mobile tyre fitting page for Woodford Green at /mobile-tyre-change-woodford-green-ig8/.
Permit zones WG to WGD, the High Elms school street and a boundary that splits the High Road
Redbridge runs resident permit zones WG, WGB, WGC and WGD in Woodford Green, plus WFA, with the South Woodford zones STHWP and SWB adjoining to the south. The bays that matter when your car has stopped, such as the WGB bays in Woodside Road alongside 597 and 599 High Road, and the permit parking areas in Claremont Grove and Theydon Grove, operate 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday. Outside those hours the kerbside pressure eases considerably, which is a real difference from areas with all week controls, and it is why evening and weekend jobs in the Monkhams and Broadway streets are simpler to do safely. If your vehicle is sitting in a controlled bay during enforcement hours, tell us when you call so we can plan the lift rather than leaving it there.
A School Street has been proposed for Woodford Green Primary School covering High Elms, operating 8.00 to 9.15am and 2.30 to 3.45pm Monday to Friday in term time and enforced by traffic camera with penalty charge notices, with free exemptions for residents and businesses inside the zone. The consultation closed on 21 December 2025, so check the signage on the day rather than assuming, and tell us if your car sits inside that zone during those windows. Elsewhere, expect speed bumps and brick surfacing along Snakes Lane and The Broadway, which matters if a low vehicle is being towed rather than lifted, and a pinch point on Monkhams at its junction with Inmans Row.
One local quirk explains a lot of frustration. The Redbridge and Waltham Forest boundary runs through Woodford Green just west of the High Road, and the 2007 appraisal notes it was drawn arbitrarily with no features on the ground influencing its course, so the same corridor is maintained by two different councils. The DfT even logs the Woodford New Road count points under Waltham Forest while the High Road points sit under Redbridge. Redbridge's 2026/27 capital programme puts Forest Way in Monkhams ward at £298,771 for resurfacing, with Whitehall Lane at £275,206 and Princes Avenue at £318,173 on the reserve list, and the 2013 Broadway appraisal describes the northern section's tarmac as poorly and inappropriately patched. Monkhams Lane also appears in the council's 2026/27 flood alleviation programme, with rain gardens planned on Knighton Close and Knighton Drive.
The forest edge: Whitehall Road, Chingford Lane and why nobody can pull onto the grass
Epping Forest is not scenery in Woodford Green, it is the western half of the district. Whitehall Road and Chingford Lane both run west out of the High Road across Forest land towards Chingford and Highams Park, with trees on both sides, and Chingford Lane leads on to the stretch of forest holding Highams Park Lake. What most drivers do not realise is that the grass is not available as a working platform. Epping Forest Byelaws 1980, byelaw 3(11), prohibits driving vehicles on most Forest land without the Conservators' consent and confines parking to a vehicle park during the hours the Conservators prescribe, with the definition of a vehicle covering cars, vans, lorries, caravans and motorcycles. Pulling a casualty vehicle or a truck onto the verge beside the greens is not a legitimate option, however inviting the space looks.
The lanes themselves are the second problem. Redbridge's appraisal says many roads away from the High Road resemble country lanes rather than suburban feeder roads, quite narrow with mature hedgerows and no footpaths. Bunces Lane is described as narrow, with mature hedgerows and no footpath. Friary Lane is an unsurfaced track that skirts the boundary of the school. Mornington Road narrows as it runs north, loses its footpath and has a grass verge and mature hedgerows alongside it. No footway means no refuge, so anyone waiting beside a stopped car on those lanes is standing in a live traffic lane with hedge at their back. Wait past the hedge line or in a gateway instead, and let us bring the vehicle out to somewhere with a kerb.
Two more forest specifics catch people out. City of London car parks are gated and shut at night, with the schedule from Monday 15 September 2026 opening from 7.00am and closing from 6.30pm and the times shifting through the year, so a car left in a forest car park can be locked in until the morning. And this side of the district carries traffic the rest of IG8 does not: fallow and muntjac deer, whose numbers have grown and which the City of London warns will cross with no warning because headlights do not register with them the way they do with us; conservation longhorn cattle grazing Whitehall Plain in July, held by fencing, cattle grids and NoFence collars rather than continuous barriers; and licensed horse riders on the shared routes that meet the road near Whitehall Road, Chingford Lane and the golf course.
What to do while you wait, depending on where you have stopped
On the High Road, get everyone out on the pavement side and behind the guardrail where there is one, never between the car and the traffic. Hazards on, sidelights on in poor light. A warning triangle at least 45 metres back is worth putting out on this kind of road, though not on a bend or a crest where it will be seen too late. Then give us a landmark rather than a house number. The Anti-Air War Memorial, the Churchill statue at Broomhill Walk, The Castle, the underpass by St Thomas of Canterbury, Sir James Hawkey Hall or Woodford fire station at 2 Snakes Lane West all put us on the right 200 metres immediately.
In the Monkhams grid or the village side streets there is usually time to do things properly. Turn the wheels into the kerb on any slope, leave the car in gear or in park with the handbrake set, and if you are in a permit bay during enforcement hours, say so when you call. Stay with the vehicle if it is safe to do so, because we will usually need the key, the locking wheel nut key and the boot opened, and an unattended car always takes longer to deal with. Have the registration and the postcode ready, and check whether your car is on the Redbridge side or the Waltham Forest side of the High Road if you are near the boundary, because it changes who is responsible for the road surface if there is damage to report afterwards.
On the A406 or the M11 approach the advice reverses. Do not stay in the vehicle if you can get clear of it, do not attempt a wheel change, do not set out a triangle, and call 999 first if you are stopped in a live lane. Then call 07960 200253 and tell us your direction of travel and the last junction you passed, because a truck approaching from the wrong side of Charlie Brown's Roundabout has a long way to go to turn around.
Flat batteries, empty tanks and the faults that actually strand IG8 drivers
Woodford station has stood on its site since 22 August 1856, and it still shapes how cars are used here: short hops from the Monkhams avenues or the Broadway down to Snakes Lane, then a vehicle standing still all day, or all week in a car park that allows a seven day maximum stay. A journey of a mile or two never replaces what starting the engine takes out, and a battery that copes in September gives up on the first properly cold morning. A jump start is from £60. What we will not do is jump it, take the money and drive away. If the engine fires and then dies again, or the charge warning light stays on, the fault is the battery or the charging system, and you should know that before you set off towards the A406.
Modern cars make this fussier than it used to be. Stop start vehicles run AGM or EFB batteries that need coding to the car when they are replaced, hybrids carry a small 12 volt auxiliary battery that will strand you even with a perfectly healthy traction pack, and many models now put the jump points somewhere other than on the battery itself. Give us the make, model and rough age of the car on the phone and we will arrive with the right kit rather than working it out on your driveway on Monkhams Drive.
Fuel is the other regular one. Delivery is £70 to £200 depending on the fuel and the quantity, and running dry is easy on a corridor where you can spend a long time stationary between the A406 and High Road Buckhurst Hill. If you have put the wrong fuel in, the most important thing is not to start the engine, and not to turn the key to the ignition position if you can avoid it, because a modern common rail diesel begins taking damage in the high pressure pump as soon as it is running on petrol. Leave it, call us, and we will either drain and flush it or recover the vehicle to where the work can be done.
Non-fault accident recovery in Woodford Green costs the claimant nothing
If someone else caused the collision, our recovery costs you nothing. The cost of moving a non-fault vehicle is recovered from the at-fault driver's insurer rather than from you, so there is no reason to leave a damaged car sitting on Chigwell Road, on Snakes Lane East or on the High Road because you are worried about the bill. We say that on the phone before anyone sets off, and in every other case we agree the price on the phone too, with no call-out fee.
At the scene, the law is straightforward. Under the Road Traffic Act 1988 you must stop, and give your name and address and the vehicle owner's details to anyone with reasonable grounds for asking. If details are not exchanged at the scene, the collision must be reported to the police as soon as reasonably practicable and in any event within 24 hours. Photograph the vehicles where they came to rest before anything is moved, get the other registration, and take a wider shot of the junction, which matters at somewhere like Charlie Brown's Roundabout or the Woodford New Road roundabout where the lane you were in decides the argument.
Our position on cost does not change with the postcode. Recovery and towing from £80, jump start from £60, fuel £70 to £200, no call-out fee, and a price agreed before anyone leaves. We keep our own fees low and visible because in a non-fault claim every pound of inflated charge comes out of the same pot the claimant is eventually paid from. You are entitled to choose who recovers your vehicle, and you do not have to accept the first firm that appears at the roadside.
Woodford Green car recovery FAQs
Can your recovery truck cross Broadmead Road bridge?
No. Broadmead Road bridge has been closed to all motor vehicles since July 2023, after an inspection found cracks, falling concrete and concrete corrosion above the Central line. Pedestrians, cyclists and motorcycles can still cross, but cars, vans and recovery vehicles cannot. The signed diversion runs via the A406 to Chigwell Road or up to the High Road, so when you call 07960 200253 please tell us whether you are on the High Road side or the Chigwell Road and Woodford Bridge side.
My car has stopped on the High Road outside Bancroft's School. Can you work there?
Not comfortably, and usually we will not try. That stretch has 2 metre guardrails in front of the school, no informal nearside refuge and count point 26199 nearby recorded 32,878 vehicles a day in 2025. Our normal approach there is to load the car onto a flatbed and move it into a side street or a car park before doing anything else. If the car still rolls and it is safe, Mill Lane, The Square or Johnston Road are a short push away.
How much is car recovery from Woodford Green?
Recovery and towing starts at £80. A jump start is from £60 and fuel work is £70 to £200 depending on the fuel and the quantity. There is no call-out fee, and non-fault accident recovery costs the claimant nothing because it is recovered from the at-fault insurer. We agree the price on the phone before anyone sets off, so there is nothing to discover when the truck arrives.
Can a flatbed get into Woodford station car park on Snakes Lane?
Yes. The TfL car park at Woodford station, IG8 7QE, is listed as having no height restriction, which is unusual for a station car park and genuinely useful for recovery. It has 184 bays (173 standard, 10 Blue Badge and 1 motorcycle), is open 24 hours, is cashless and allows a seven day maximum stay, at £10.60 on weekdays and £7.40 at weekends. It is often the sensible destination for a car lifted off the High Road.
I have broken down on the A406 at Charlie Brown's Roundabout. What should I do?
Treat it as the most dangerous spot in the district. The A406 approach carried 149,848 vehicles a day in 2025, including 4,997 HGVs, and there is no hard shoulder or lay-by on the roundabout or its slips. Get clear of the vehicle on the side away from traffic, stand behind a barrier, leave the hazards on, do not set out a triangle and call 999 first if you are in a live lane. Then call us with your direction of travel and last junction.
Do you charge more at night or at the weekend in IG8?
No. The rate you are quoted on the phone is the rate you pay, whether the call comes in at two in the afternoon or two in the morning, and there is no call-out fee on top. Night work in Woodford Green is often easier than daytime work anyway, because the Redbridge permit bays operate 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday and kerbside space in the Monkhams and Broadway streets frees up outside those hours.
My car is stuck in a permit bay in Woodside Road. Will I get a ticket while I wait?
The WGB permit bays alongside 597 and 599 High Road operate 8.30am to 6.30pm Monday to Friday, so a vehicle without a valid permit in those bays during those hours is exposed. Tell us when you call and we will prioritise lifting the car out rather than working on it in the bay. Outside those hours and at weekends the pressure is far lower and there is usually time to work properly.
Can you jump start a stop-start car on Monkhams Avenue?
Yes, and the wide Monkhams roads with pavements on both sides and plenty of converted driveways make it one of the easier places in IG8 to do it. Stop start cars run AGM or EFB batteries and some models put the jump points away from the battery itself, so give us the make, model and rough age when you call. A jump start is from £60, and if the car fires and dies again we will tell you the battery or charging system is the real fault rather than repeating the jump.
Can you recover a vehicle from Woodford Golf Club car park on Sunset Avenue?
Yes. The car park at IG8 0ST is the parking the City of London lists for Hatch Forest and Whitehall Plain, and it is one of the few pieces of hard standing on the forest edge, which makes it a workable place to load a car. Be aware of the Victorian granite kerbing that survives along Sunset Avenue, which is far less forgiving on tyre sidewalls than modern chamfered kerb.
My car is locked inside an Epping Forest car park overnight. Can you get it out?
City of London forest car parks are gated and shut at night, and the schedule from Monday 15 September 2026 has them opening from 7.00am and closing from 6.30pm, with times varying through the year. If your car is behind a locked gate, access has to be arranged with the Forest rather than forced, so call 07960 200253 and we will plan the recovery for when the gate is open rather than leaving you guessing.
Do you fit tyres in Woodford Green as well as recover cars?
Yes, but it is a separate service with different kit and different pricing, so it has its own page. Mobile tyre fitting is from £140 on ordinary and urban roads in IG8, and £250 to £750 where a motorway or fast dual carriageway such as the M11, the A406 or the A12 requires live-traffic safety procedure. Full detail is on our mobile tyre fitting page for Woodford Green at /mobile-tyre-change-woodford-green-ig8/.
Can you work on a car stopped on Bunces Lane or Friary Lane?
We can reach them, but we would rather not work there. Redbridge's own appraisal describes Bunces Lane as narrow, with mature hedgerows and no footpath, and Friary Lane as an unsurfaced track skirting the school boundary, and Mornington Road loses its footpath as it runs north. With no footway there is no refuge for anyone standing beside the car, so the safer plan on those lanes is to load the vehicle and bring it out to a road with a proper kerb.
I put petrol in my diesel at a filling station on the High Road. What should I do now?
Do not start the engine, and avoid even turning the key to the ignition position if you can, because a modern common rail diesel starts damaging its high pressure pump as soon as it runs on petrol. Leave the car where it is if that is safe, and call 07960 200253. Depending on how much went in and whether the engine was run, we will either drain and flush the system or recover the vehicle so the work can be done off the road.
Is non-fault accident recovery really free for me in IG8?
Yes. If another driver caused the collision, the cost of recovering your vehicle is claimed from their insurer rather than charged to you, so it costs the claimant nothing. We confirm that on the phone before we set off. We also keep our own charges low and visible on purpose, because inflated recovery and storage fees come out of the same settlement pot the claimant is eventually paid from.
Do you cover Woodford Wells, Woodford Bridge and Buckhurst Hill as well as IG8?
Yes. Woodford Green adjoins Buckhurst Hill to the north, Woodford Bridge to the east, South Woodford to the south and Chingford to the west, and we work across all of them. The one thing that changes is the route in, because with Broadmead Road bridge closed a job on the Woodford Bridge side is reached differently from one on the High Road side. Tell us the nearest cross street and we will take the right approach.
Can you recover an electric or hybrid car from a driveway in the Monkhams Estate?
Yes. Most EVs need to be transported on a flatbed rather than towed on their wheels, because the driven axle turning can feed current back through the motors, and the wide Monkhams roads with driveways on both sides give us the space to load properly. Hybrids strand people surprisingly often through the small 12 volt auxiliary battery rather than the traction pack, and that is usually a jump start from £60 rather than a recovery.
Will the High Elms school street stop you reaching my car?
A School Street has been proposed for Woodford Green Primary School covering High Elms, running 8.00 to 9.15am and 2.30 to 3.45pm Monday to Friday in term time, camera enforced with penalty charge notices, and the consultation closed on 21 December 2025. Check the signs on the day rather than assuming, and tell us if your car is inside that zone during those windows so we can time the job around it.
Updated August 2026. Lines open 24 hours. Call 07960 200253.
Broken down in Woodford Green? Tell us the landmark and we will come to it.
Call 07960 200253 any hour for recovery and towing from £80, jump start from £60 or free non-fault accident recovery across IG8, from the Monkhams avenues to the forest edge at Whitehall Road. Price agreed on the phone, no call-out fee.
