Recovering a vehicle at Bow Interchange, where the A11, A12 and A118 meet
Bow Interchange sits at the western edge of the Stratford patch, on the Tower Hamlets and Newham boundary, where the A11 (Bow Road), the A12 East Cross Route on its 1,450ft flyover, and the A118 (Stratford High Street) all come together over the River Lea. It has a genuinely difficult safety history: two cyclist deaths there in 2013 led to low-level cycle signals in 2014, and Transport for London's Bow Vision programme, smoothing the curves, rebuilding kerb lines, widening the carriageway and diverting a contraflow lane, was largely finished by February 2025. That is recent enough that a recovery driver who last worked this junction a year or two ago should not assume the old kerb positions or lane markings still apply.
We come out of 68 Ruckholt Road in Leyton, a short run up the A12 to Bow, so this junction gets worked routinely rather than looked up on a map before we set off. When you call, tell us which arm you're stuck on, the Bow Road side, the Stratford High Street side, or up on the flyover itself, because the safe place to stand and the safe place for us to pull in differs across the three levels. Stratford Broadway and the end of the old town-centre gyratory
Central Stratford used to run as a one-way loop around Great Eastern Road, The Grove and Broadway. Newham Council and TfL took it apart in stages: Broadway switched from one-way to two-way traffic from 17 September 2018, with Great Eastern Road and The Grove following later the same year, alongside new pedestrian and cycle crossings at Angel Lane, Great Eastern Road and The Grove/Romford Road, segregated cycle lanes and widened pavements. The wider scheme ran from September 2017 to spring 2019. If your own memory of Stratford town centre is from before that, the traffic now moves in both directions on streets that used to be one-way only.
Kerb space along Broadway itself is also not constant through the day. The Outdoor Market trades Tuesday to Saturday plus a casual Sunday market, the Indoor Market runs Monday to Saturday and Sunday afternoons, and The Grove Market trades Tuesday to Saturday, all on or just off Broadway. During those hours we usually look to stop on a side street just off the market frontage rather than directly outside the stalls.
Getting from the West Ham side to the Olympic Park side of the tracks
Stratford station's rail throat, 19 platforms in total, 17 of them in daily use, carrying the Elizabeth line, Central line, Jubilee line, DLR, London Overground, Greater Anglia and c2c, runs straight through the middle of the patch. Alongside it, the Bow Back Rivers network, the Channelsea River, City Mill River, Waterworks River and Prescott Channel among others, forms a second barrier. Together they separate the E15 town-centre and West Ham side from the E20 side around Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park and Hackney Wick, and only a limited number of road bridges cross both barriers at once, several of them built specifically for the 2012 Games.
That matters for recovery because straight-line distance can be misleading. A car stuck near Here East or Sugar House Island on the E20 side, and one stuck near Stratford Centre or West Ham Park on the E15 side, might be a few hundred metres apart as the crow flies but need a completely different approach route by road. Telling us the nearest landmark, Westfield or Stratford Centre on one side, Here East, the Aquatics Centre or Chobham Manor on the other, lets us pick the right bridge first time rather than finding out at the last junction.
Breakdowns on a London Stadium matchday or event
London Stadium holds 62,500 seated, up to 80,000 for a concert, and has been West Ham's home since 2016. On any day there's a fixture or event there, or one at Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, Newham extends controlled parking hours to 8am until 9pm across the Stratford Central, Stratford North West, Stratford South West, Stratford South East and West Ham residential parking zones, and that applies even on a bank holiday when normal restrictions would otherwise be lifted. Carpenters Road East, Marshgate Lane, Montfichet Road and White Post Lane are formally closed for three hours before the event and two hours after.
If your breakdown falls in that window, say so when you call. We would rather plan a route around a known closure than arrive at a barrier that wasn't there the last time we worked this ground.
Roads a recovery truck cannot simply stop on
The A11, A12 and A118 through Stratford form part of the TfL Road Network and are red-route controlled for most of their length, meaning stopping is restricted outside specific loading exceptions. We were not able to confirm the exact single or double red line designation for every stretch against a published Traffic Regulation Order, so on the day we check the road markings on site rather than assume, but the working rule is the same either way: a breakdown on Bow Road, the East Cross Route or Stratford High Street itself gets moved to the nearest safe side road rather than worked on the red route.
The same applies, for a different reason, along Broadway during market hours, Tuesday to Sunday, when stallholders occupy much of the kerbside space that would otherwise be available.
Height barriers at Westfield Stratford City and Here East
Westfield Stratford City opened in September 2011 across 73 hectares with 350 stores, and its car parks carry a general height limit of 2.2m, rising only to 2.4m for Blue Badge bays in Car Park A, level P1; the Shopmobility car park is limited to 2.1m. A car loaded onto a flatbed, or a high-roof recovery vehicle, will not clear these barriers, so recovery from inside a Westfield car park happens at street level, meeting at the ordinary vehicle entrance or exit rather than driving a recovery truck in after you.
The same logic applies at Here East and the other multi-storey car parks around the Olympic Park. If you can still drive the car as far as the barrier or the street outside, that saves everyone the detour; if you can't, tell us which level and bay you're on so we know which exit to aim for.
Low traffic neighbourhood filters at Manbey, Stratford Park and West Ham Park
Three of Newham's low traffic neighbourhoods sit inside this patch. The Manbey filter, at the western end of Manbey Grove where it meets The Grove, started on an experimental basis in March 2021 and was made permanent in September 2022, the same month the Stratford Park LTN was confirmed. The West Ham Park LTN, bounded by Romford Road, Vicarage Lane, Densham Road and West Ham Lane, has a diagonal filter at the Aldworth Road junction. All three are enforced by ANPR and CCTV, using planter-style filters that let pedestrians, cyclists and emergency or waste vehicles through while blocking other through traffic.
A recovery truck gets no automatic exemption from that. If your car has broken down inside one of these filtered cells, we plan the approach from outside the filter rather than assuming we can drive straight through it, which occasionally means a slightly longer route to reach you than the map suggests.
Waiting safely on West Ham's terraces and the residential parking zones
South of the town centre, streets like those around Portway sit in a conservation area of Victorian terraced housing, parked on both sides in the way that housing stock typically is, which leaves a genuinely narrow carriageway for a recovery vehicle to work in. Further out, Newham runs five residential parking zones across the wider patch, Stratford Central, Stratford North West, Stratford South West, Stratford South East and West Ham, with permit hours that vary street by street according to the signage rather than one single borough-wide time.
While you wait, hazard lights on. If you've broken down on a live carriageway such as the A11, A12 or A118 and it isn't safe to stand beside the car, stay inside with your seatbelt on and wait for us to call ahead; if you're on a quieter residential street, the pavement is the safer place to wait. Since the whole of Newham has sat inside the Ultra Low Emission Zone since 29 August 2023, keep in mind a non-compliant vehicle recovered within or out of this area may carry the daily charge unless it's exempt.
When it's a tyre, not a recovery
Not every roadside call in Stratford needs a tow. Stratford is also one of the more sustained active construction patches in London right now. International Quarter London and Stratford Cross have been building since 2014 and were still under construction as of May 2024; Sugar House Island's build-out continues in phases; Stratford Waterfront and East Bank brought Sadler's Wells East in 2025, with V&A East due in 2026 and the BBC due in 2027; and Chobham Manor is delivering 850 homes.
