Fore Street and the Tunnel at Angel Edmonton
Fore Street is the A1010, the road that carries traffic north-south right through the middle of Lower Edmonton. It runs from Upper Edmonton up to Edmonton Green, then keeps going north as Hertford Road towards Ponders End and Enfield. Where it crosses the A406 North Circular, at what's known locally as the Angel Edmonton junction, the North Circular actually dips underneath through the Fore Street Tunnel: a 310 metre twin-bore tunnel opened in 1998 that carries in the region of 100,000 vehicles a day. It's one of the busiest single points in this part of north London, and it's exactly the kind of place where a stopped car or van becomes a real problem fast.
Local reporting has covered multi-vehicle accidents at this junction leading to tailbacks stretching back through Edmonton, and the tunnel itself has been through scheduled maintenance closures too. Sterling Way and getting you off a busy junction safely
Sterling Way is the surface road that links Lower and Upper Edmonton across the North Circular at this junction. A road safety campaign group, Betterstreets.co.uk, has pointed out that Sterling Way doesn't have a safe pedestrian crossing, which tells you something about how fast and how busy that stretch runs. If your vehicle has stopped anywhere near here, our priority when we arrive is getting you and the vehicle away from the live lanes first, then sorting the recovery itself. Overnight lane closures on the approach to the Great Cambridge junction, including nightly closures of Sterling Way, ran through part of 2026 as maintenance work continued; if you're ever caught by a closure or diversion in that area when you call us, just say so and we'll route around it, at no extra cost to the price we've agreed.
Edmonton Green: station, shopping centre and bus station
Edmonton Green is the hub of Lower Edmonton. Its Overground station on the Weaver line was actually called Lower Edmonton High Level until it was renamed in 1992. Right beside it sits Edmonton Green Shopping Centre, open since 1967 with well over a hundred shops and stalls, plus the bus station that serves routes running along The Broadway and out towards Fore Street and Hertford Road. It's a dense, pedestrian-heavy part of N9, and Enfield Council has plans to redevelop the whole area over the next ten to fifteen years, adding new homes and commercial space around the market.

Silver Street and Pymmes Park
Head south of Edmonton Green and you reach Silver Street station, on the same Weaver line, sitting between White Hart Lane and Edmonton Green stations since it opened in 1872. One of the entrances to Pymmes Park is close by too. The park's walled garden dates back to the Cecil family estate of 1589, and the park itself opened to the public in 1906, with other entrances on Victoria Road, Park Lane and Sweet Briar Walk. This side of N9 is quieter and more residential than Fore Street itself, terraced streets rather than main road frontage, and that brings its own kind of breakdown: a kerb strike on a tight residential corner, a flat caused by a pothole rather than a busy-road hazard. Bounces Road and the Quieter Neighbourhood scheme
Bounces Road runs through the heart of Edmonton, within walking distance of the shopping centre, and it also forms part of the boundary of a low-traffic scheme Enfield Council calls the Edmonton Green Quieter Neighbourhood, covering more than fifty residential streets in the area bounded by Bounces Road, Fore Street (A1010), the North Circular and Montagu Road. It's had a long consultation history: an early round of engagement in 2023, a further round in early 2024 where a majority of the 128 people who responded doubted it would be effective, and a revised version put to statutory consultation between September and October 2025, this time with timed rather than round-the-clock filters and adjusted one-way directions.
The one part of the scheme with a confirmed date is the School Street outside Fleecefield and Brettenham primary schools, which operates term-time on weekdays from 8.15 to 9.15am and 3 to 3.45pm, with camera enforcement due to start from 13 April 2026. We haven't been able to confirm whether the wider set of filters and one-way changes across the rest of the scheme area has been finally signed off and built. If you break down on one of these residential streets, just tell us the street name and anything you can see on the signs when you call, and we'll check the route before we come out rather than guessing.
Montagu Road and the edge towards Meridian Water
Montagu Road runs north from near the North Circular and the Montagu Road Recreation Ground, past a cemetery entrance, up to Advent Way, with onward links to the A1055 Meridian Way and the A10 Great Cambridge Road. The recreation ground itself has playing fields, a play area and hard courts. Advent Way and the retail park that sits on it, home to the likes of Screwfix, Howdens, Euro Car Parts and the units near IKEA, is technically just over the border into N18 rather than N9, but it's close enough that we treat it as part of the same run out from Leyton. If you've broken down at the trade park or anywhere along Montagu Road, we'll come to you either way.
Residential streets and road surface
Enfield as a borough actually has one of the better pothole records in the country. Recent figures put it second-lowest in the UK for potholes per 100km of road, with a real drop in reports between 2024 and 2025 after extra funding came through. That's worth saying plainly rather than pretending every street in N9 is falling apart.
What the council's own figures do show is that the risk isn't spread evenly: a small share of A-roads are rated as needing maintenance, but a notably higher share of the borough's minor U-roads, the kind of residential streets you find off Fore Street and around Bounces Road, are rated in poor condition, and the balance of repair work has been shifting from planned maintenance towards emergency fixes as budgets tighten. If a pothole or a kerb has damaged a tyre, a wheel or done something to your suspension on one of these residential streets, that's a recovery job we're set up for. We haven't found a currently enforced controlled parking zone right in that core area (an earlier proposal for the streets round Balham, Croyland and Hertford Road didn't go ahead), but always check the signs and lines on your own street, they can change.
