Archway Road and the A1
Archway Road, the A1, carries more traffic than any other road the Highgate Society monitors, around 20,588 vehicles a day against 18,044 on North Road and 12,258 on Highgate High Street. TfL has also been consulting on a 20mph limit and safety scheme between Church Road and Northwood Road, with construction pencilled in for 2027, so expect some lane narrowing and cone-outs on this stretch as that work starts. Swains Lane and the cemetery
Swains Lane, running south from the village between the two halves of Highgate Cemetery, is the one road in Highgate we plan around before we arrive. It averages an 8% gradient and touches roughly 20% in places, with a stretch that's barely wide enough for one car, walled on both sides and shaded by trees. There's no realistic passing space on that section, so if you've broken down partway down, we'll usually ask you to stay put with hazards on rather than try to reverse, and we'll work out the safest point for the truck to reach you, sometimes that's the wider ground near the East Cemetery gate rather than the exact spot you stopped. Parking either side is restricted 10am to noon on weekdays under Haringey's zone, free outside that window.
Highgate Hill and North Hill
Highgate Hill, the old route up from Archway before the Archway Road cutting was built, climbs about 58 metres over 0.8km, roughly a 7.2% average gradient, steep enough that it needed trolleybuses rather than horse trams when trams were still running. North Hill carries on the same spine past Highgate School, and locals living along the stretch between St Michael's School and the Gatehouse pub call it more of an urban road than a village one. Term-time school runs add to that around drop-off and pick-up, so if you break down near the school gates at those times, pull as far onto the verge or a side turning as you safely can while you wait for us.
Highgate West Hill and The Grove
Highgate West Hill drops away from the village towards Hampstead Heath with gradients up to around 14% and a carriageway narrow enough that two larger vehicles, a recovery truck included, sometimes have to wait for a gap to pass each other. The Grove, just off it, is used as a cut-through back to Hampstead Lane, and the T-junction where the two meet is one locals flag as awkward to pull out of safely given the speed traffic can be doing on Hampstead Lane itself. Pond Square and the village centre
Pond Square is effectively the traffic hub of Highgate Village now that the right turns into Bisham Gardens and South Grove have been closed off, so most through movements funnel across the square itself. It also hosts a Thursday market stall through spring and summer, plus occasional events like the Fair in the Square, both of which narrow the usable road width around it further.
